EU creates transparency on trucks’ CO2 emission and fuel-efficiency

The European Union’s new legislation on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions will come into force next year. It will lead to greater transparency and accountability in the truck industry, and ultimately more fuel-efficient transport solutions.

From January 1st 2019, all truck manufacturers in the EU must declare the fuel consumption and CO2 emission on each produced truck. The values are determined by simulated calculations based on the vehicle’s type and custom configurations. The legislation is introduced in order for the EU to reach its climate goal of reducing greenhouse gas from transport by 30 percent by 2030. Heavy-duty trucks account for approximately 5 percent of the total C02 emission in Europe.

The standardisation of consumption information will make it easier for truck customers to select the most fuel-efficient vehicle and lower their business’ CO2 emission. The transparency will hopefully lead to increased focus on environmental footprints within the truck industry, which will ultimately lead to more fuel-efficient transport solutions.

When the legislation has come into force, the next step is for EU to evaluate the declared values. Based on these, CO2 value limits are expected to be introduced by September 2019.
