PNO Finland Local Community Day with Sipoo Municipality

Following the waste collection day in Nikkilä village back in May, team PNO Finland spent a working day volunteering in support of Sipoo’s local community. This time, our Finnish Team has been cleaning the residential area of Söderkulla from garden waste and invasive plant species.

For more than 10 years, Hansas forest – a green site in Söderkulla residential area – has been a collection site for garden waste and old Christmas trees.

The majority of the waste comes from residents in the neighbourhood, that for personal convenience choose to go for the forest glade instead of the official waste station.

Due to the huge amount of organic waste constantly piling up on the site, invasive plant species have started quickly spreading throughout the area.

Kari Ojamies, Sipoo’s municipal gardener, and the municipality’s green unit usually take care of removing garden waste, invasive plants and old Christmas trees from the forest glade. The waste is collected  in dumpsters, which will then be transported to the closest trash collection site for recycling.

Last Friday – 18th of October – Team PNO Finland came to the aid of Sipoo’s green unit. Seven PNO staff members choose to spend a working day out in nature and stayed in Hansas forest until all green waste and invasive plants were dragged out of the area.

Besides the satisfaction of looking at a nicer, cleaner forest glade, PNO team and Sipoo municipality hope to inspire local residents to bring their garden waste to the appropriate waste station in the future.

This project is part of our purpose to lead the transition to sustainable freight via People, Planet and Profit. Following this principle, last year all PNO’s branches pledged to engage in projects helping the local communities at least twice per year.
