In the world of logistics and transportation, the quest for efficiency and sustainability is ever-present. One solution that is gaining momentum is the Duo Trailer, a configuration featuring two trailers attached to a single truck. This concept, which is not entirely new and is already used in other countries, will gain momentum in Sweden due to changing legislation.

Changing Legislation in Sweden

The Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) and other local authorities are working to improve the efficiency and sustainability of transportation, especially in key areas like ports, terminals, and industrial zones. This will become possible with the Duo trailer concept. As of December 1st, 2023, the Swedish Transport Administration is opening its roads to these extended vehicle combinations. The Duo trailer is a configuration that involves linking two trailers to a single truck. This effectively creates a road train. The Duo concept allows for a higher load-carrying capacity per trip. It is essential to note that Sweden is not the only country exploring this concept. Other countries, such as Finland, have already embraced it, showcasing its effectiveness and potential.

What do these changes mean for our customers?

The Duo Trailer configuration enables the transportation of larger loads in a single trip, reducing the number of journeys required for the same amount of cargo. This results in increased transport efficiency and cost savings. Since Finland has already embraced the concept, this means our customers will be able to transport more cargo across multiple countries in the Nordics. Using Duo Trailers leads to a reduction in CO2 emissions, estimated at 27%.

We can help our customers comply with these new rules to optimize their operations. Contact us today to learn more about these solutions and how they can benefit your business.

PNO Nederland recently delivered 6x new E-cool distribution reefer trailers to DistriFresh, logistics subsidiary of Vion. These 100% electric E-cool reefer trailers will be used for supermarket distribution in the Netherlands. This is another important step in supporting our customers in expanding their electric fleet and minimizing their CO2 emissions. For us, it is about leading the transition to sustainable freight. We thank DistriFresh for this sustainable cooperation.

We did it. We became a better B Corp in 2023.

We’re excited to announce that we’ve officially received our B Corp recertifications with a score of 101.1. This is a big milestone for us. When first becoming a B Corp in 2019, we achieved a score of 80.6 and have set ambitious targets to become a better B Corp in 2023. For us, B Corp is about the movement and creating real change. We’re investing in numerous people and planet initiatives to create a positive impact. These include Scope 1-3 GHG emissions, health initiatives, gender equality, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The transportation industry isn’t exactly a clean industry. We’re aware that we need to cut carbon emissions – fast. That’s why we made a commitment to become Net Zero by 2030. We often get asked how we plan to achieve that. While a concrete plan is under development, we do know it’s about taking action now.

So, we’ve heavily invested in measuring our carbon emissions with the help of carbon accounting software company Normative. Most of our carbon emissions – around 98% – come from our Scope 3 emissions. That’s connected to supply chain activities that happen before and after us. We identified that the trailers we purchase from our suppliers contribute the most to our environmental footprint. It has become clear to us it’s crucial to engage our suppliers – because cutting carbon emissions is a team effort.

We’re especially proud and excited about our close collaboration with Ekeri, our Finnish supplier of side-opening trailers. Ekeri has done an outstanding job at providing data to calculate emissions for a trailer they’re manufacturing for us.

The results? A clear picture of Ekeri’s carbon emissions resulting from the manufacturing of our side-opening trailer, including the materials and process steps that create the most carbon emissions.

“We at Ekeri are very proud to work together with PNO towards the same ambitious goals. Since we already reduced and compensated scope 1&2 emissions, we were ready to go on calculating the most challenging scope 3. After the smooth calculation process, we now understand our scope 3 emission better, and at Ekeri, we are ready to gear up to reduce the biggest sources of emission. Follow Ekeri and PNO to hear more about our future work together as pioneers in the transport industry.” – Daniel Asplund, Sustainability & Aftersales Manager, Ab Ekeri Oy.

We’re looking forward to continuing this fruitful partnership and diving even deeper into understanding where these emissions come from and how we can reduce them together.

In June, PNO Finland received the all-electric Schmitz Cargobull S.KOe COOL semi-trailer and handed it over to our customer Kylmästi Paras Oy. Representatives from PNO Finland, supplier Schmitz Cargobull, service partners Helsingin Autokylmä Oy and Ahlqvist Services, and our customer Kylmästi Paras Oy came together for a day of training. The semi-trailer arrived safely from Schmitz Cargobull’s factory at PNO Finland. From there, PNO Finland handed over the proverbial keys to the semi-trailer – so it can get rolling on the road.

This is a big milestone for us. We’re all about leading the transition to sustainable freight at PNO. A key pillar of our purpose is to invest in forward-thinking products and collaborate with like-minded suppliers and service partners. We do this not only to deliver high-quality products to our customers, we also support our customers.

That’s why we – as the first rental and Finnish company – were excited to receive this all-electric and emissions-free semi-trailer by Schmitz Cargobull. Making a positive impact is a team effort. It’s about working together with our suppliers and service partners to find ways to lower our environmental footprint and offer our customers a more environmentally friendly product. Again, it’s about people and the planet.

We’re excited to gather data and insights into the semi-trailers to best serve our customers’ needs.

We are proud to announce that PNO and Daimler Truck will enter into a new cooperation in which PNO will deliver rental trailers through the CharterWay dealer network in Germany.

With PNO’s expertise in trailer rental and CharterWays expertise in trucks, we’re excited about the opportunity to partner with CharterWay. PNO will serve CharterWay’s customers by offering rental trailers as part of the “One Stop Shop” concept. This concept has been offered by CharterWay dealers in Germany for many years and we’re excited to become part of this concept by adding rental trailers from PNO.

This cooperation further strengthens our market presence in Germany and our continued commitment to serve our customers – so they can effortlessly rent assets and focus on their core business.

Gender Balance Findings

We’re committed to empowering women in a typically male-dominated industry. To mark our commitment to gender equality, we have signed the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs). Developed by the UN, these are a set of Principles offering guidance to businesses on how to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment in the workplace.

A commitment is great – yet we want to drive change and take action. To drive this change, we realized we need a good picture of where we’re at in terms of gender equality today. So we’ve conducted a PNO-wide analysis of our gender balance. We analyzed how many women and men work at PNO, on different career levels, and across our different country offices. Across all PNO, we’re 31% women and 69% of men.

The bottom line? We’ve got work to do. That’s why we have introduced the “Women in Leadership” program. We introduced a leadership coaching program for selected women across PNO, we’re offering sponsorship for women, a min 50% representation of women across all trainings, and are doing a gender pay gap analysis. Stay tuned for more insights.
