Biodiversity is in rapid decline. The primary cause of this decline is human activity such as through habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change. So we’re partnering with Den Danske Naturfond – an environmental organisation that protects and restores wild nature in Denmark. How do they do this? They buy land through voluntary agreements with private landowners and preserve nature, so that nature can do what it does best – thrive. The best thing is that this land can never be sold.

Protecting and restoring wild nature doesn’t only preserve the beauty of our planet. Healthy ecosystems are also fundamental to our health. To bring more awareness to this connection, we combine our contribution to protect nature with our internal health initiatives. For every 6km run, we protect 1m2 of land. For every 8km biked, we protect 1m2 of land. For every 10km walked, we protect 1m2. For every 15min meditated, we protect 1m2 of land. In 2023, our health initiatives from all country offices will count towards our contribution to buy and protect wild nature in Denmark with Den Danske Naturfond.

We work very closely together with our customers to find opportunities for a lower environmental impact. Our Swedish team sensed an opportunity for a win-win situation for our customer and the planet. Due to our close relationships with our suppliers, we became aware of Continental’s about their new tire ECO+ tires. These ECO+ tires come with multiple benefits including fuel savings, lower rolling resistance and a lower environmental impact. At the same time, we’re working closely together with ZF, and more specifically with the ZF Transics telematic solutions who provided TX-TRAILERPULSE, a trailer telematic solution and OptiTire, a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). OptiTire has many benefits, including less fuel consumption and therefore less CO2 emissions, less tire wear and the driver is able to see tire pressure inside the cab while driving.

With this customer-centric approach, our Swedish team approached our customer Eurolink. We consulted them on using Continental’s new ECO+ tires and installing ZF’s OptiTire system. The goal was to significantly reduce fuel consumption. We agreed to a pilot project. That’s 6 months ago. Today, we’re excited to announce our preliminary findings. There is complete transparency on the tire pressure. The driver can see this in the dashboard. Drivers can get the tires repaired and maintained before they get worn out due to wrong tire pressure. This reduces the need for new tires. At the same time, our customer experienced fuel savings of 0.2l per 10km.

It’s about going beyond owning trailers. It’s about finding solutions for our customers that benefit people and the planet.

👋 Ok, that’s it for now from us. Cheers to all the amazing B Corps out there. Together, we #WeGoBeyond business as usual – for good.

Let’s face the elephant in the room, shall we? Our industry is pretty male-dominated. The biz world is full of glass ceilings, inequality and invisible barriers for women. Despite the fact that women are natural leaders and often develop the most innovative strategies for building strong and productive business cultures. So women are told it’s all about getting a seat at the table. And if there isn’t a seat at the table, women should drag their seat there. That doesn’t work for us. Forget a seat at the table. We need to build a whole new table. So that’s what we did. We introduced our Women in Leadership Coaching program.

With this program, we want to uplift women’s voices and support them in discovering their authentic leadership style. Here’s what it looks like:

  • We selected 6 women from across our country offices to join this program.
  • They will attend 6 group sessions facilitated by our coach to share experiences and connect with other women. We deep-dive into goals, beliefs, self-image & confidence, actions, wall of fear & the knowing-doing gap.
  • They also have 4 one-on-one sessions with our coach for personalised development. During these sessions, they explore in-depth individual needs and desires, limiting blocks, and focus on creating productive and positive habits.
  • There will be a follow-up call after 3 months for continued support and keeping up the momentum.

All PNO teams spend two full working days supporting the local community, and last week, it was time for the German Team to have a day out of the office to volunteer. The team spend the day with Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB). ASB is a voluntary aid organisation with different responsibility areas.

For this Community Day, the Team helped distribute food to people needing extra support. ASB collects unsold food from supermarkets in the morning and hands out suitable amounts to around 50-100 people every Thursday.

“I especially liked the exchange with the people getting the food. That was very giving and valuable,” Axel Auffarth, Fleet & Rental Coordinator, PNO Germany.

A little bit more about ASB

ASB was founded in 1888 as a voluntary aid organisation, and back then, it all started with an aid course on first aid. Over time, ASB has grown and serves two major core areas.

As a relief organisation, ASB is active in the following areas:

First Aid Training, Rescue Service and Emergency Preparedness, Civil and Catastrophe Protection, Ambulance Service, School Ambulance Service and Foreign Aid.

As a charitable organisation, the ASB is active in the following areas:

Assistance and care for the elderly, hospice services, assistance for children, young people and families, and services for people with disabilities.

Strategy weekend 2023

Strategy Weekend 2023

At the weekend, everyone from PNO met in Copenhagen to spend time together, meet new colleagues and discuss strategies for 2023. The weekend included exciting presentations from the leadership group, a session about cultural differences by Dennis Nørmark, workshops and delicious food.

We’re very excited that we all know in which direction we’re going and have insights and understandings that empower us to work even better across the countries.

We’ve collected highlights from our weekend in the video below.

Community Day

Together with Rotary, our Swedish team volunteered and met with people from Ukraine who fled to Helsingborg for their community day. Team members had personal meetings to answer all the participants’ questions about life in Sweden. The questions concerned, for example, job searching, education and how to access and receive healthcare when living in Sweden. It was all about providing support and information on settling and integrating into Swedish society.

It is a global network of 1.4 million neighbours, friends, and leaders who volunteer their skills and resources to solve problems and address community needs. The members usually meet once a week to broaden their horizons and make good contributions to communities near and further afield.

The mission of Rotary is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders. Rotary, see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, our communities, and ourselves.

Trees supported with PNO health

How about boosting your health while helping the planet?

That sounds like a win-win to us, so at PNO, we combine our people and planet initiatives by ensuring that everyone at PNO can focus on mental and physical health; while doing so, employees are supporting the planet.

The results are in, and the team achieved 18.840 trees in 2022.

PNO has supported WeForest in restoring forests and growing trees in Zambia since 2018. And today, PNO is restoring 39.14 ha by growing an estimated 47,073 trees.

We’re supporting the growth of trees through different initiatives:

In 2022, we also introduced an add-on to support trees when focusing on mental health initiatives such as meditation with the Headspace app, digital detoxes, time spent in nature and creative activities. This initiative ran from May to August.

Our Health Initiative, “More than Kilometres”, is an ongoing initiative throughout the year. With this, we support trees for the kilometres we’ve been running, walking, and cycling. From January 2023, minutes meditated will be a permanent part of our monthly calculation.

  • 2 km of walking supports a tree
  • 5 km of cycling supports a tree
  • 1 km of running supports a tree
  • Every 10 minutes, you meditate a tree is supported.

PNO has also supported trees for each completed eNPS survey from our employees and for each new person we hire to the team. Want to know more about our health initiatives? Check out this link.

Until the end of 2022, we’ve been supporting projects through WeForest, primarily based in the Copperbelt Province in Zambia. The projects are helping the local community by engaging smallholder farmers in reversing deforestation.

The forests in that region need assisted natural regeneration. The typical local miombo forest has suffered from mining and charcoal production, so WeForest trains farmers to restore their small farms so the forests and land can get healthy and grow again. You can read more about WeForest and the projects we have supported here.

Net Zero by 2030

Our journey to Net Zero by 2030

Back in 2020, we committed to becoming Net Zero by 2030. We know it’s a big commitment because we want to become emissions-free in our operations and throughout our entire value chain.

Bet you’ve heard that one before, right? Wondering what it means and how are we going to get there? We do too. So we’ve made a bit of a plan following some great advice from the SME Climate Hub. It looks something like this:

  1. Reducing our emissions
(aka cleaning up our backyard, for example, by switching to renewable energy)
  2. Reducing our value chain emissions
(aka working with our suppliers and vendors to buy better materials and find ways to lower emissions)
  3. Making climate a core part of our strategy
(aka CO2 emissions are a part of making decisions)
  4. Accelerating climate action in society
(aka partnering with environmental and social organisations that create systemic change)

The thing is: A plan is great, but it will take many years to truly get there and transform our industry to become sustainable. We know that we have to focus on taking action, so we’ve invested in our climate to compensate for the things we can’t change today while we continue to work for change in the future. We believe every little action counts and is better than doing nothing – it’s not about being perfect.

We have, for example, committed to a portfolio of permanent carbon removal projects for our emissions from 2019 to 2021. We did this together with a third-party expert, Normative. They helped us decide what to invest in for our removal projects based on guidelines put together by Oxford Offsetting Principles which outline how offsetting should be approached to achieve Net Zero.

Normative pointed us to Patch, which offers a broad portfolio of high-quality carbon offset projects with international reach. If you are curious to know more about which projects we’ve selected, you can check it out here.
